During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
