The megacity Rises to Toxic Pollution After Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe level established by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times higher than healthy standards.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, officials had enforced a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the city as the cold season sets in.

However in recent months, the newly elected local administration approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and environment".

Court Verdict and Enforcement

To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court agreed to the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Several recording stations throughout the capital showed pollution peaking around the night hours to some of the worst measurements seen during the festival in at least three years.

International Effects

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming declining pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe records ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously considered as the planet's dirtiest city.

Diverse Contamination Sources

The problem in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, producing dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as colder air descends.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical toll on the nearly 33 million people calling home the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for ten thousand early mortalities each year in the city.
