Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His child, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.

The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
