Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Girls Abducted in Gunbattle at School in Nigeria

Violent incident at learning center
Learning centers in Nigeria's northern region have become frequent targets for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a educational institution for young women in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The criminal group stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, officials stated.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to create fear.

Local residents informed journalists that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have increasingly been targeted for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the conflict.
