Cyclone Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a uncommon category five hurricane as it veers towards the Caribbean island, causing deadly sudden floods and mudslides.

This weather system, which registered wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 06:00 GMT, is presently veering toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is expected to reach land by early next week, based on data from weather experts.

Alerts of power cuts and structural damage have been issued as the hurricane brings up to 76cm of precipitation and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Take cover without delay," locals have been told.

This hurricane is the thirteenth hurricane in this year's Atlantic storm period, which typically ends in November.

Most Intense Hurricane Threat

A highest-level storm is the strongest type, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Even though the hurricane is set to diminish in strength to a Category 4 storm before making landfall on the island, meteorologists said there was "almost no noticeable change in the overall impacts" upon making contact with land, and that the storm will be "equally strong" when it hits the island.

Urgent Readiness Measures

With storm-force gusts and precipitation already expected well before it moves across central Jamaica - perhaps encompassing the national capital - alerts state that "readiness efforts must be accelerated".

"An extended timeframe of damaging winds and heavy rainfall are underway and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening sudden floods and many rock slides," advised weather authorities.

The nation's leader the official commented: "I know that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the optimal approach to manage anxiety and any nervousness and concern is to stay ready."

Inhabitants are being instructed to fortify their houses with sand barriers and wooden boards, and to accumulate basic necessities.

Broader Impact

Warnings are also ongoing for regions of the neighboring country encompassing the primary urban center, the neighboring country and the eastern part of Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Mudslides already being caused by the hurricane have already killed two in the country, according to local authorities.

Expected Course

The hurricane is forecast to cross Cuba by Wednesday before moving through the Antillas Mayores and entering the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have weakened to a third-level cyclone.

Environmental Context

Although it is difficult to associate particular meteorological occurrences to environmental shifts, scientists say it is causing weather phenomena increasingly frequent and more extreme.

Increased sea temperatures produce greater water vapor in the air, contributing to the formation of hurricanes.

Ahead of the commencement of this year's Caribbean cyclone season, climate agencies predicted higher-than-average occurrence, mentioning heated marine conditions and possible enhanced seasonal rains around the western African continent - where tropical systems frequently develop.
