Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
