"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise longs to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile fans have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently show them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes follow breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed resilience called for a fresh approach – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still making music."
